VIII Training Course in the Physics of

Correlated Electron Systems and High-Tc Superconductors

Vietri sul Mare (Salerno) Italy

6 - 17 October 2003

First Announcement: General Information

Experimental and theoretical research in the physics of strongly correlated electron systems has been growing more and more in the last few years. The complexity of the problem of correlations in electronic systems makes the field intrinsically interdisciplinary, requiring an international coordination for the achievement of reliable results. The School, which is aimed at graduate and PostDoc researchers, will offer the possibility to meet, in one setting, various experts from different physics areas, all relevant to the investigation of strongly correlated electron systems. The proposed project of practical training courses intends to promote the theoretical research in the field of highly correlated electron systems by putting together senior researchers with an outstanding experience and young researchers.

The course will be opened to a limited number (30) of young (aged under 35) researchers. The registration fee, which cannot be absolutely waived, will be €300. The staying expenses (accommodation and meals costs) will be of the order of €1000. A significant number of grants to cover the staying expenses will be assigned, upon request, to accepted participants.

The young researchers will benefit from training in scientific techniques and various methodologies under the guidance of 4 highly qualified senior researchers:

Professor Antoine Georges

Laboratoire de Physique Theorique

Ecole Normale Superieure

Paris, France

Professor Masatoshi Imada

Institute for Solid State Physics

University of Tokyo

Chiba, Japan

Professor Miodrag L. Kulic

University of Augsburg

Theory II

Augsburg, Germany

Professor Alejandro Muramatsu

Institut fuer Theoretische Physik III

Universitaet Stuttgart

Stuttgart, Germany

Professor Antoine Georges: Strongly correlated electrons: Materials, Models and Dynamical Mean-Field Theory.

Professor Masatoshi Imada: New Theoretical Tools for Correlated Insulators and Metals.

Professor Miodrag L. Kulic: Electron-phonon interaction and strong correlations in high-T superconductors.

Professor Alejandro Muramatsu: Monte Carlo simulations of quantum systems with global updates.

A detailed bibliography related to the topics of the Training Course will be sent with second circular. This is to favor a background preparation for further discussion and operative research activity. The most relevant scientific results of the project should be the training of young scientists by means of training through research; the establishment of European co-operation through transnational mobility; the integration in a common development line of several diversified researchers.

Vietri (from Veteri, its ancient Roman name) sul Mare (on sea) is located within walking distance from Salerno and marks the beginning of the Amalfi Coast. It is situated five minutes by car from Salerno, one hour from the Naples Airport and three hours from the Rome Airport. Short rides take Positano, Sorrento, Herculaneum, Pompei, Paestum, Vesuvius or, by boat to the islands of Capri, Ischia, Procida.
